This is a quintessential McCartney album. It is, possibly, the 70’s album that best represents McCartney’s pop sensibility. I’m not claiming this to be a great album per se ; it falls far behind the glorious Band On The Run, and contains only a couple of outstanding songs. However, it shows a master of the pop art at work ; catchy tunes, imaginatively embellished and cleverly produced. Perhaps this is the kind of enjoyable album that McCartney could knock off without breaking a sweat back then, because, dear listener, he was such an experienced and skilled practitioner. All that was missing was, well, John, George, Ringo and Mr Martin to work their collective alchemy and transform the average into the exceptional.
